GALLERY - COSMIC QUERIES

The following body of work compliments and expands on cosmic and mythic themes, which Ashley Coll began exploring in her line of jewelry. As her jewelry is designed to be worn on either side many of these works are created as diptychs... one side/painting enhances an understanding of the other.

"This first painting in a series of three is entitled 'WHO'. The black sweeping strokes spell out the word 'who'. The figures are from Nazca and Aboriginal art... all contemplating the question 'how we came to be and who put us here'." - Ashley Coll

"My series of belt buckles, using precious metals, black epoxy and steer horn drew its inspiration from my interpretation of the currents of energy which flow through the cosmos. I named these works after Castor and Pollux, the Gemini constellation, because of the fraternal bond these brothers had, which was so strong the gods placed them eternally together in the heavens." - Ashley Coll

"This series is an interpretation of photos of constellations where the stars appear as black dots so as to be more visible. The jewelry was constructed of precious metal, black epoxy and steer horn. The whiteness of the horn was a perfect background for my interpretation of photographed star systems." - Ashley Coll

"ONENESS and TO TOUCH THE STARS express the eternal desire of man for immortality. In this quest to unite with the immortal man devised numerous mythologies which are represented here by glyphs. In Oneness the diverse glyphs are united by the Hebrew letter shin which is the start of the word Shadai which in Hebrew is the most mysterious name for god. The shin transcends earthly diversity for a oneness with the universe. To Touch the Stars also deals with mankind’s desire to unite with the infinite here denoted the Hebrew word El (god) which transcends heaven and earth. Glyphs represent man’s earthly diversity which can be united by study (torah), spiritality (avodah) and acts of loving kindness (gemilut chasadim) which are the foundation upon which a united earth rests." - Ashley Coll
